FIVB/USAV rules apply except for the following
items:
(note - a rule book will be available at the courts for people to
look at)
All leagues:
games will be presided over by a single
referee so no separate official scorekeeping will be
done (therefore there are no special equipment rules, i.e. no
special jerseys or numbers on jerseys)
3 games per night - 27 point cap in all games
unlimited substitutions are allowed, no rules
on who can be subs
We periodically have situations where a team
(teams) do not take the court when it is time to start a
game. Keep in mind that teams can start as long as they have
at least 2 players. In order to keep matches more on time
and penalize teams causing the problem, the following
penalty points procedure is in effect.
- when the referee calls for teams to line up (at the
completion of the warmup or between games) and teams do not
line up in a timely manner (they can request the use of one
or both of their 30 second timeouts to delay the start),
then the referee announces that the game is in the penalty
points stage.
-for each minute after that where a team (teams) is not on
the court ready to play, the opposing team will be awarded 4
points; this will continue for each minute until the
penalized team takes the court and is ready to play (if the
time reaches 7 minutes, the team which has been ready is
awarded a 25-0 win…this continues for each subsequent game
if needed - after allowing up to the 3 minute interval
authorized between games, if so desired). An example is if
team A delays the start and is assessed 3 minutes of penalty
points, they start the game out with a score of 0 points and
team B starts with 12 points.
-when the penalized team takes the court and is ready to
play, the referee will circle the entire set of penalty
points awarded to their opponents for that game (as an
indicator that penalty points were given) and then start the
game.
Co-ed:
cannot have more men than women on the court
except when a team unexpectedly ends up with uneven numbers;
then, if the opposing team captain approves, this rule
will be waived. In this situation the team captain must write
an explanation on the back of the referee’s score sheet
before play starts explaining what they know about why the
person(s) is missing
Note: regular USAV co-ed rules require 6
players, with alternating male/female players. There
is no allowance for less than 6 players. Because we are
not in strict USAV competition though, we are trying to
accommodate for some unexpected situations in our league
without penalizing players. We are trying to allow for less
than 6 and still trying to have the teams respect the USAV and
league rules. If teams try to take advantage of this league
allowance then we can go back to strict rules and teams will
forfeit games if they do not have 3 males and 3 females
available to play or we can use the "ghost" rule.
we have dropped the female hit rule.
4’s:
no playing the ball into the opponents court with an overhand pass. We feel
this is frequently too difficult to call if it's perpendicular
to the shoulders or not so we are not allowing it at all.
we will play the
indoor rule instead of the outdoor 4’s rule about touching the
opponents court (beyond the center line); the foot/feet
must be on/above the centerline. However, any body part above
the feet may cross the centerline and touch the opponent's court
provided this does not interfere with play.
